O'Grady's parents are Jim O'Grady who is a financial adviser and Jan O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School. She graduated in 1981. Models appeared in commercials for a time before moving out into Los Angeles. The first role she had was as a model as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also was a part of several commercials. She appeared in 1988's romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later a regular part in ABC comedy China Beach, opposite Dana Delany.
