O'Neil was a contestant on Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. The quality of her singing impressed judges, and so she was voted into the final 100th stage. O'Neil had received high praise from the panel of judges. She suffered major defeats in the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, followed by the second place. Judges were horrified by this and proclaimed to the public they believed that Melissa was the most talented contestant. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once in the future. After two more breathtaking performance on September 7 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, judge Werner reportedly predicted that the headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's history . O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by President Paul Martin immediately.
